Fishtown Engagement Session | Ashley + Josh
Ashley & Josh’s Fishtown Engagement Session
Ashley and Josh chose Fishtown for their engagement session, giving us one of Philadelphia’s most interesting neighborhoods to explore together. Between the colorful streets, murals, historic architecture, storefronts, and constantly changing backgrounds, Fishtown is a great location for couples who want engagement photos that feel a little more urban and distinctly Philadelphia.
Rather than choosing one backdrop and staying there, we spent the session walking through the neighborhood and letting the surroundings give us ideas along the way. That is one of my favorite ways to photograph a Fishtown engagement session. There is always something different around the next corner, which allows the photographs to have plenty of variety while still feeling like they belong together.
With Ashley and Josh, I kept the direction relaxed. I helped them with positioning and movement when they needed it, but also gave them room to interact naturally as we explored. Walking through the neighborhood, talking, laughing, and moving between locations created opportunities for candid photographs alongside the more intentional portraits.
Fishtown works especially well for couples looking for engagement photos that feel different from Philadelphia’s more traditional locations. Instead of gardens or open landscapes, you have brick, murals, interesting architecture, neighborhood streets, and plenty of texture. The combination gives a Fishtown engagement photographer a lot to work with and makes it possible to create several completely different looks within a relatively small area.
Timing also plays an important role when planning engagement photos in Fishtown. Photographing later in the day gives us softer light and allows the neighborhood to gradually change as we get closer to sunset. The combination of natural light, street lighting, storefronts, and the energy of the neighborhood can create an entirely different atmosphere toward the end of the session.
Engagement sessions are also an opportunity for couples to become comfortable in front of the camera before their wedding. You do not need to know how to pose or spend the entire session wondering what to do. I provide direction when it is helpful and then step back when a moment is already happening naturally.
Ashley and Josh’s Fishtown engagement session gave us exactly what I love about photographing couples in Philadelphia. We explored, worked with what we found, and created photographs that incorporated the personality of the neighborhood without losing sight of the two people at the center of them.
